The ninth verse describes the vastness of God’s knowledge in a unique way through quantity. It says,

“Had all the trees on the earth been made into pens, and the sea multiplied seven seas of ink, yet the will not exhaust the Words of God; verily God is almighty, all-wise.” A similar verse with a little difference is found in Surah Kahf.

If we now consider seriously we will note that it may be possible to make some thousands of pens from one tree and all human knowledge and thoughts for the past thousand centuries have been recorded through pens made from a few trees and a small river of ink would suffice for that.

But when we take into account the umpteen trees that cover the dense jungles , mountains and plains an consider the trillions of tons of water that fills each ocean that constitute three fourth of the earth and then multiply it by seven then we will realize how much knowledge can be written.

The Qura’n says that all these will be exhausted but not the words of God. Can there be any better des c r i p tion of God’s knowledge?

No matter how many zeros you add to a number you will not be able to account His glory because these numbers are lifeless and soulless. But the number that is being described in the verse is unlimited and a food for thought. These numbers are alive, expressive and full of meaning.

The “Alif and Laam” in the word “AlBahr” signifies generality so it includes all the rivers of the world. Consider that all the rivers are joined together so that they become one and then we can use the singular term for them so the seven seas will mean seven seas each one constituting all the rivers of the world.

The “words of God” means those words of knowledge from God or those creations to which the knowledge of God is directly attached because that knowledge is unlimited and despite being immense all the rivers and trees are limited to a number so then cannot define the divine knowledge.

The interesting point is that it says a “Tree” will the word pens has been used and this denotes how many pens can be made out of a single tree.

The word seven has been used to describe the seven oceans ( without considering the rivers) so it will mean that no matter how much the quantity of water is expanded then will not be suffice to record the words of God.

In the last sentence the term all might and all wise have been used and they denote God’s authority and power and knowledge to create and His knowledge that encompasses all creations.

The last thing to be discussed is the back ground of this revelation. Some Jews said, “ God has mentioned everything in the Torah and nothing has been left” The Messenger retorted, “ Whatever is mentioned in the Torah about the knowledge of God is like a drop of water compared to an ocean” It was then that this verse was revealed mentioning the vastness of God’s knowledge. It is also said that this verse was revealed when the disbelievers among the idolaters said, “Whatever Mohammad brings will soon be exhausted.”

The Messenger replied, “These are the words of God and will never end” This verse was revealed to prove this point. (1)
