BEING EVER LIVING AND ETERNAL IN ISLAMIC TRADITIONS.INTRODUCTION

The question raised by the newcomers to the discussion on the knowledge of God is, “You say that God is the creator of everything, so tell us who His creator is?”

It is surprising that some western philosophers have also raised this question and so we learn their capacity in philosophical is very low and their thoughts are still in the initial stage.

Bertrand Russell the famous philosopher of England writes in his book “Why I am not a Christian”, “In my youth I believed in God and regarded the proof of cause and effect to be the best proof or that there will be a cause for anything that exists. If continue counting the causes like in a rosary then we will ultimately reach the first cause God. But later I gave up this belief because I thought that if every thing must have a cause then what is the cause of God and who is His creator? (1)

But I do not feel that anyone who has a little connection with philosophy, and he knows a little about recognizing God will fail to answer this question.

It is very clear, when we say that everything has a creator, then by this everything we mean everything destructible and contingent.

This premise is only valid for things that did not exist earlier but came later. This cannot be for the necessary being that was ever living and is eternal.

The ever living and eternal being does not need a creator so this question of his creator does not arise. He exists because of Himself, He was never non-existent or non present for causes to make Him exist or present Him.

His existence is in His own presence and not acquired. He is not a creation that He will need a creator. Mr. Russell and his friends should have asked this question for themselves, “If there is a creator for the creator then who is the creator of this presupposed creator?” If we continue the series then ultimately it will reach absurdity and negate itself. But if we reach a being that is present by itself and which does not reach a creator then it is the Necessary Being and He then is the creator of the universe.

This can be explained in another manner; supposing that we are not God worshippers but materialists then even we have to accept that everything is the result of a cause then the materialists should be asked, “ If everything is derived from matter then what was the cause for matter?’ they have no answers for this. They will say material ever exists and will be for ever; it needs no cause as if it is the necessary being.

We find that all philosophers materialist as well spiritualists believe at least on one necessary and ever living being; a being that does not need a creator or has been so forever.

The difference is that the materialists consider something to be the necessary being which does not have any knowledge and does not have any intelligence. They believe in its form and existence in time and station but those who worship God believe Him to be the one with complete knowledge and determination and do not believe that He has a body or is stationed anywhere for they consider Him to be above time and station.

The previous proof about the knowledge of God is that the unique creator of the universe is one with knowledge and awareness and is unlimited.

So even if Mr. Russell leaves the worship of God and starts worshipping matter his ideology will not save him from the answer to this question. This question will still seek an answer because even the materialists believe in the cause and the feel that every event needs a cause. This solution to this difficult question is that we should learn to differentiate between the ever living and eternal and the contingent. We will then discern that the dependent creation are those that are contingent or every creation needs one creator but He who is not a creation will he ever need a creator?
