INTRODUCTIONWhat is the reality of the beautiful names?

We have already explained the meaning of the first verse earlier. In short, they have been warned about changing, or altering the names of God. “To God alone belong the most beautiful names; so call Him by them and leave alone those who are profane while using His name” the people of the yesteryears used to give God’s names to their idols or used to invoke God through the names of His creations and thus they became enmeshed in polytheism and disbelief.

The second verse mentions the arguments of the idolaters that if the Messenger of God believes in the unity of God then why does he invoke Him with different names? The name Rahman was absolutely new to them. Their objection was that if the belief is Unity of God then why these many names? The Qura’n then says, “Say, “So invoke God or invoke the Most Beneficent; which ever you invoke for him belong the best names.”

The third verse comes after the explanation has been given for God’s creativeness , the arrangement of the universe, and his knowledge of things seen and unseen and it says, “ God, there is no God but He; His are all the very best names.” Only He has the best of names and attributes and only He is worthy of being God and worship. No one else is worthy worship.

In the fourth and final verse nearly ten attributes of God of which some have been mentioned earlier are reiterated and then it is added, “ He is God the Creator, Maker, the Fashioner; His are all the excellent names.” A few more attributes are now mentioned and the total rises to eighteen.

What we learn now is that these verses speak about the attributes of beauty, greatness and reverence in His names. Each one of them refers to a special perfection and negates any imperfection. These are no ordinary names for they are mentioned in many places in the Qura’n and they are relied upon.

We will now discuss which of these names are the beautiful ones? Do they specify any number? Is yes then what is the number?
