The Book of deeds in the right or left handThe Book of Deeds in Islamic traditions

The 15th and the last verse, also presents a new and clear des c r i p tion about the book of deeds. It says:

“When the scrolls are laid open, when they sky is unveiled and when the garden is brought near. Each soul shall know what he has brought.”

The origin of “Nushirat” is “Nashar” which means to open wide. This has been used for the book of deeds because they will be closed after death and will be opened on the Day of Accounts, like the records are closed at the end of an investigation and then opened again in the court of law or because all the books of deeds will be in God’s custody and will be distributed among men on the Day of Reckoning.

All the commentators have chosen one of the two meanings and some have mentioned them both together but the first distribution is better.

The books of deeds will be opened in a manner that not only the person concerned (will see and remember his deeds) but all those present that Day will see it. This will be a source of joy to the good people and a source of shame for the sinners.

Verse 13 of Surah Isra says:

“And on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring out a book that he will find opened.” This verse also confirms the meaning above.

From the above verses we learn that God of course will be aware of all that they do and the body parts too shall witness. Their witness too will be included in the books of deeds and this will be done by the angels. On the Day of Judgment the evil people will have their books of deeds in their left hands and the good people will have them on the right. This book of deeds will talk and say whatever is to be said.

The books of deeds will be laid bare and the people on that Day will be aware of all the sins and good deeds. The good people will invite all others to read their books while the evil people will be wailing out of fear, shame and infamy.

These des c r i p tions are very educative and they will be discussed under Explanations.
