The second verse speaks about belief and obedience on the straight path as the cause for entry into Paradise. Verses 13 and 14 of Surah Ahqaf say:

“Verily those who say, “Our Lord is (only) God and are steadfast shall have no fear and shall not grieve. Such shall be the dwellers of Paradise abiding in it forever as a reward for what they used to do.” (1)

The origin of the word “Istiqamu” is “Istiqamat” which means steadfastness on the straight and true path. There is a hint of level headedness and separation from dissidence as well as being steadfast.

If some commentators have taken it to mean the “Middle path” or “balanced behavior” then it too has the same connotation.

According to Raghib in Mafuradat:

“Istiqamat is used for the traveler who treads the straight path and this is why the true path is called “Siraatol Mustaqeem”. The perseverance of mankind should be on this path.” (2)

A clear road also stands for Istiqamat and it being steadfast. So the cause for entrance in paradise is to be steadfast on the true and straight path.

One of the explanations often quoted from the Imams about this verse is that, “It speaks of the succession of Hazrat Ali and his steadfastness on it (Which is what true Islam is).

Earlier it has been said, “Say Our Lord is (only) God” and then the true path has been added to it with “Summa” though it is normally used for distance tells us that such a deed is the result of a pure belief.(3)

Another notable point is that man comes into difficulties because of deeds he has previously committed and he is sad about them and then at times the causes of hardships are the future deeds for he is afraid of them. In this verse the Qura’n says, “Those who as such should not be sad about the past and not afraid of the future.

We end this discussion with a hadith from the Messenger:

Some one asked him, “Tell me about the deed through which I can enter paradise.” He replied, “Say ‘My Lord is God and then be steadfast on it.” The man asked again, “Which is the most dangerous thing that I should be wary of?” the Messenger answered by catching his own tongue and said, “This”. (4)
