IntroductionIntroduction

The first verses refer to those who stood always against God in rebellion and then add: ““These two antagonists dispute amongst them about their Lord: For those who deny will cut out a garment of fire.”

It may mean that the fire will cover them like dresses or that the fire itself will become their attire? The thing more dangerous than this is that, “and boiling water will be poured over their heads.” The verse states further, “And thus will their bodies and skins be melted.”

The word “Yusharu” is derive from “Sahar” and means to melt fat etc and is used for things that melt due to the heat of the sun. The verse then speaks about other punishments and says, “And there will be maces of iron (to punish) them.”

The word “Maqami” is the plural of “Miqmaa” is used for maces or such pieces of wood used to strike another person.

In the end the verse describes their torment and says, “They will be forced back every time they try to escape the punishment. (And they will be told) “Taste the punishment of fire.”

Undoubtedly such punishments or even lesser ones become the causes of death in this world but their bodies will be so re-composed that they will not kill them in order that they feel and go through the deserved punishments. This tells us that the laws governing this world are redundant in the hereafter. (Reflect)

The second verse describes the dresses of the sinners in Hell in a different manner. It says their dresses will be of liquid pitch and fire will cover their faces.

The word Sarabeel is the plural of Sarbal and according to Raghib in Mafuradat it means a shirt or upper garment of any gender. The same meaning is confirmed by Lisan-ol-Arab and Sahah-ol-Loghat and some people have said that the word is used for any kind of dress that covers the upper part of the body.

“Sarwal’ means that which covers the lower portion of the body. This word is used to denote a single piece of cloth that covers the body and is also used for a coat of armor.

But Qatraan which is often read as qatraaan and Qitran at times is a black foul smelling combustible material which is derived from a tree called “ Abhal” and was boiled to make it hard and then it was rubbed on camels with skin disease (1) for they believed that this acidic and combustible material would cure this disease. (2) This Qatraan is a kind of plant and there is another kind which is used to create gas by burning hard coal. It is said that this Qatraan can be extracted from gum trees for it is a sticky liquid. It is often derived from other trees with sap and is used to treat animals. From the above ve3rse we find that the bodies of the sinners in Hell will be draped with a black colored combustible dress and every feature of it will be opposite the dress and its benefits of this world. A dress is an adornment and saves the person from heat and cold but this dress in Hell is very ugly, smelly and combustible.

This is the punishment of those who used to wear costly and decorative dresses in front of the orphans and the needy and were proud about teasing them. This is why this dress will be given to them in Hell.
