The Qura’n tells us that those who commit planned murders will also suffer forever in Hell. Verse 93 of Surah Nisaa says:

“ Whoever kills a believer intentionally will go to Hell and remain there forever God will curse him and remove His grace from him; there is a great torment ready for such people.”

Four kinds of punishments have been prescribed for those who murder intentionally, the eternal stay in Hell, the wrath and curse of God, the removal of God’s grace, and a great torment.

Will these punishments be given only if they do not repent and seek forgiveness or will it apply in all conditions? The second part seems very far fetched because when a great sin like polytheism can be forgiven after repentance and the pagans are forgiven after they accept Islam then how can we say that the murder of person is a greater sin than those?

It is also recorded in history that the Messenger forgave the killer of Hazrat Hamza and accepted his repentance. Many Muslims also forgave the murderers of their kith and kin after they accepted Islam and asked for forgiveness. It is true that it is not easy to repent from such great sins and merely saying “May God forgive me” does not dissolve the crime. He will have to present himself for retribution or give adequate compensation to the family of the murdered person to make them agreeable and forgive him. He will also have to swear that he will not repeat such a sin in future.

There is a hadith quoted from the Holy Messenger:

“The destruction of this world is easier to god than the murder of a believer and if the creatures in the heavens and the earth are complicated in the murder of person then god will throw all of them in the fire.” (1)

How is it possible that an intentional murderer will suffer for ever in hell when we will see in the later discussions that only the disbelievers will there for ever? The commentators have given various explanations for this.

They sometimes say that such people do not have the capacity to repent and ask for forgiveness or few of them do so. They die in this state of disbelief and thus deserve to remain in Hell forever.

It has also been said that this punishment is for those who deny that intentional murder is unlawful and do it and this foul deed is like disbelief.

Some others have said that the word “Khaluud” does not mean a never ending punishment but a long period of chastisement. The first and second explanations seem more proper.
