The Features of HellWhat do we mean by the gates of Hell?

From the various verses of the Qura’n we learn that there are many gates of Hell and one of the verses speaks of seven gates. Do these gates tell us that it is the deeds that take us to Hell and that are the entrances to hell as has been described about the gates of Paradise?

Does this mean the various stations of Hell That?

the various hadiths speak about or are both the meanings included in these verses?

It is better that we study the various explanations of the Qura’nic verses to get to the answers to these questions. Let us study the under mentioned verses:

Verses 43-44 of Surah Hijr:

“Verily! Hell is the promised abode for all of them. It has seven gates and a class of sinners is assigned to each gate.”

Verse 29 of Surah Nahl:

“So enter the gates of Hell to live in it. Evil indeed is the abode of the arrogant.”

Verse 71 of Surah Zumar:

“And the unbelievers will be led to Hell in groups and its gates will open when they arrive.”

Verse 145 of Surah Nisaa:

“The hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire and no helper will you find for them.”

1. See the meaning verse 72 of Surah Zumar and verse 76 of Surah Ghaafir.
