Now the argument turns on the matter of captivity in Islam, and how to behave towards the prisoners of war. Looking for temporal gain in the form of ransom from captives, is strictly condemned, and has no room in Islamic JIHطD. If in a fight there has already been a heavy loss of life; captives may be taken, but not for ransom or other temporal gain; rather to quench the flames of war, and then it is up to the prophet or the true Imam who is the General Commander of the Islamic forces, to decide how to behave towards the captives - i.e. when is safe to release them, and whether they should be forgiven and freed, or ransomed, or kept in prison, or punished.
