``And when you bring them not a sign, they say why did you not forge one!'' This is an irony from the side of the polytheists and the unbelievers. Here, by signs, Quranic verses are meant. When the verses did come down, they belied and denied them, and when there was a delay or an interruption, they said to him: ``Why don't you forge one!'' Their questions implys that they meant to say to the prophet: ``You put together words, and promulgate them to us, as God's inspiration!''But Mohammad S.A. who had not the least amount of doubt, in his heart that the Quran was God's inspiration, and that, no human composition could contain the beauty, power, and spiritual insight of the verses sent down to him; he paid no heed to the taunt and sarcasm of the ignorant and foolish foes, and very indifferently said to them: ``I only follow that which is inspired to me from my Lord. These verses are objects of discernment from your Lord, and guidance and Mercy for a people who believe.''VERSE NO. 202
