Qura’n speaks about the elite prophets when it addresses the Holy Messenger in verse 35 of Surah Ahqaf:

“So do be patient like the resolute apostles and do not be hasty about them. They will see on that day that which has been promised to them as if they had not stayed a single hour in a day. This Qura’n is a clear message. None but the disobedient shall be destroyed.”

The status of these elite and resolute prophets has been dealt in details by the commentators and there are various questions and details that need to be proven. Some among them are as follows:

1. They are the elite among the prophets because of their resoluteness and strong will but his explanation will be acceptable only when the word “Min” in “Min ar-Rusul”(1) is des c r i p tive about all while the verse shows that this “Min” is collateral and Allama Tabrisi has recorded this view from various commentators in Majmaul Bayan.

2. There are 313 prophets in this group as has been recorded in Durre Manthur from Jabir bin Hayyan (though it is not completely reliable Mursal.) He said, “I have come to know that the great prophets are 313 in numbers.”

Some that there are only 18 such prophets and they have been mentioned in verse 83 of Surah Anam. (2)

3. These are the prophets who have been more patient and forbearing on the hardships of their people and they have faced most amounts of hardships and calamities. They are 9 in number: Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, David and Jesus. (3)

This does not mean that the prophets who have not faced great trails are not included within them for most of them have faced severe tribulations and this is why the absence of more tribulations in their lives is the proof of their steadfastness.

There are 6 known prophets who were forbearing in face of oppression by their enemy and they are, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph and Job.

As we have said before the status of the prophets does not depend on this for apostles like Lot, John the Baptist, Georges etc have faced great tribulations and hardships.

6. There are 6 prophets who were ordained to fight the enemies to uplift the religion and others were not ordained to do so, like Noah, Huod, Saleh, Moses, David and Solomon. (4)

The best explanation of the resolute prophets is in the Qura’n and they are those who brought new laws. Four among them were from the past (like Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus) and the 5th is our Messenger. The explanation of “Ulil Azm” is that they are the heralds of new laws and are also more responsible than others for they have to be resolute to fulfill their obligation. This explanation has been taken from Imam Baqir and Imam Sadiq.

The Late Allama Tabrisi has recorded this in Majmaul Bayan from Ibn Abbas. This is also recorded in Tafsir Ruhul Ma’ani from Imam Baqir, Imam Sadiq and Ibn Abbas. Suyuti the great commentator has endorsed the hadith from these two Imams to be the best and the most correct. These are the five great scholars who have spoken about this.

The translation of the poetry is:

The Resolute are the Patriarch Khaleel (Abraham) Moses, Jesus and the Friend Mohammad.(5)
