The Number of prophets mention in the Qura’n1. The Elite Prophets in the Qura’n

There is a great discussion and debate about the number of prophets in Islamic traditions. The most famous is the one in which the number mentioned is 124,000. In another set of traditions their number reaches only 8000; four thousand of whom came to the people of Israel and 4000 to the others. (1)

A tradition from Imam Reza says that the Messenger said:

“God created 124000 prophets and I am the closest to God among them and I am not proud about it (because it is only because of God’s grace) and He created 124000 successors and among all of them Ali is the closest to God.” (2)

Abuzar has related another hadith from the Holy Messenger that says:

“I asked “O Messenger of God! How many prophets were there on earth?” He answered, “124000” I asked again, “How many among them were messengers?” He answered there was a great number of 113 Messengers” (3)

In yet another hadith Imam Baqir has narrated the words of the Holy Messenger. He said, “The total number of prophets was 124000 and there were 5 who were “Ulula’zm” and they are, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammad.” (4)
