The Apostles and the knowledge of Qura’n and others Sources of the knowledge of the Apostles of God

We understand from the last 4 verses that the word “At-Taweel” has been used to denote the interpretation of dreams. And other sources have confirmed that it does mean the interpretation of dreams and most commentators accept this view.

Some people have not given due importance to the interpretation of the dreams but it is regarded as one of the realities. These are the signs and proofs connected with this topic. It also means to removal ignorance from the ignorant by those endowed with this knowledge. We can see this in details in the explanation of verse 6 of Surah Yusuf.

Qura’n has also confirmed this and has given a rare and strange example for it says that Joseph explained the fate of the great cities like Egypt in his interpretation. This interpretation also affected Joseph and led to his rise to become the highest authority in the land.

There is no doubt that interpretation of dreams is not something that can be the foundation of an apostleship but God did give a great part of this kind of knowledge to Joseph.

Qura’n also speaks about apostle Moses. And this is evident in the event of Moses and Khizr detailed in Surah Kahf (but Qura’n has given no name to Khizr). It is said that he had the knowledge which Moses had no inkling about and he had gone to meet him to learn this knowledge.

This was not about the tenets and rules of religion but about the creation of man and his life.

The ship for the weak that was scuttled by Khizr so that the tyrant would not confiscate it or the young man whom Khizr killed because he would go against his god fearing parents in the future or the wall that Khizr broke because it contained the treasure for the orphans.

Khizr helped the downtrodden and the true believers through his deeds though they were aberrations and sins in the minds of Moses and was against the Shariah and this was because Moses was not aware of the truth about things. He used to get very upset so much so that once he forgot the covenant that he had made with Khizr. He objected to the doings of Khizr without considering his own deeds but duly apologized after he pondered on them.

This story tells us that Moses went to learn from Khizr on the command of God. These kinds of knowledge were not directly connected his stature or appointment as an apostle of God but were connected with his prominence, after he pondered deeply on these issues.

If we consider Khizr to be an apostle (taking into consideration that most commentators are against this idea) then we will conclude that the knowledge that Khizr had was different from the knowledge of the Shariah. It is proven that the apostles are aware of the divine truth that his bestowed upon them by God so that they have the means to guide mankind and have the strength and authority to do so. These information or knowledge is not a must for them as apostles.

1.Tafsir Ruhul Ma’ani vol.12 page 186. Some commentators have copied this explanation. The great commentator Tabrisi has mentioned about this in Majamaul Bayan vol.5 page 210 for verse 10 of Surah Yusuf.
2.Tafsir Majmaul Bayan for verse 101 of Surah Yusuf , Tafsir Ruhul Ma’ani for verse 21, Tafsir Qartabi for verse 6, and Tafsir Ruhul Bayan also for verse 6 finally Tafsir Fi Zalalol Qura’n for verse 101 of Surah Yusuf.
