AbrahamConclusion

We will first study the verse which creates doubts about Joseph’s infallibility and purity. The most important is verse 24 of Surah Yusuf that says:

“And indeed she did desire him and he would have been inclined to her had he not seen the evidence of his Lord. So it was that We might turn him away evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely he was one of Our chosen and guided slaves.”

The verse seems to suggest that Joseph did have an inclination towards her invitation.

The Answer

We will first study the implications of the words; “had he not seen the evidence of his Lord” This tells us that he was not inclined to sin because he had already witnessed the glory of his Lord. What does the term evidence or Burhan mean?

(the word is derived from Bariha and it means every thing that is strong and helps man to reach the truth.

The commentators have given various interpretations about it. The better one among them is that it means the names and attributes of God and his presence as the most wise, the all powerful, the all hearing and the all seeing.

The second view is that Burhan means the help of God and the grace of God when the believers are worried so that they may be able to fight the army of Satan and the temptations within the souls. The proof is the ending words of this verse, “Surely he was one of Our chosen and guided slaves.”

This tells us that God’s special favors and help are always with His chosen apostles and especially in such difficult situation for they prove their certitude and purity of deeds. We will now mention some of the traditions concocted by the ignorant that are very similar to the stories known as “Israeliat”. They are u unjust to suggest that Joseph was inclined to sinful deeds but Gabriel struck his chest and prevented him from doing so or that he dreamt that his father was stopping him from it.

These suggestions are not connected to the Qura’n at all and they actually do not merit an answer. The very words that he was one among “Our chosen and guided slaves” are enough to reject all that they say. This is confirmed by the Qura’n that the path chosen by god’s representatives is never the path of Satan.

The second doubt is created against the character of apostle Joseph in the 70th verse. It says that he hid a chalice in the provision of his brother (Benjamin) when they leaving for home.

“So when he had given them their provision he put the bowl in his brother’s bag and then a crier cried out, “O you in the caravan! Surely you are thieves.”

Is it justice that a person may accuse his brother falsely and is it possible for the crier to accuse Joseph’s brother and he was unaware about it? How did an innocent, pure and infallible apostle of God give permission for his brother to be accused unjustly?

Further doubts are created by saying as to why did not Joseph tell his brother the truth so that they could return to their aged father and tell him that he (Joseph) was alive. He would have overcome his grief and not be sad anymore. Was it good to treat an aged father in this manner? Did he not make his father sadder by accusing his younger brother of theft? Was it done on the orders of God or was it the frivolous custom of the Egyptians? Why did he conform if it was a custom of the Egyptians and accuse his brother unjustly?

The Answer

We may be able to expose a lot of secrets from the verses of Surah Yusuf and others. Firstly, it is evident that Benjamin his brother had concurred with this idea and the verses tell us that he had already disclosed his secret to his younger brother so he knew why Joseph had created such a situation and he agreed with it.

Secondly, the aim of the accusation “Surely you are thieves” was to retain Benjamin with Joseph. So when the chalice was found they were all accused of theft though one of the (Egyptians) had done it. These accusatory words were those of one of his courtier but Joseph did have the cup placed in the bags to give credence to the accusation. He did this to keep his brother in comfort with him and the brother was also aware of this intention.

Thirdly, this deed was a trial and was connected to his brother as well as his father. In other words God had already informed Jacob through a revelation but the trial was that Jacob should suffer the pang of separation of Benjamin as he did of Joseph. This was to unraveled his greatness and his capacity and the younger was involved in it.

What the brothers replied was “If he steals then there was a brother of his before him who did steal” and they were referring to Joseph.
