Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 04)
Verses 5-7Verses 8-10

To prove the resurrection of Man after his death, use is made of the changes and development of the foetus, and the nature by which the barren earth is conceived to give birth to the beautiful flowers and wonderful plants and produces:ِ

``O, People! If you are in doubt about Resurrection, then consider that We created you out of dust, then of semen....''

In other word, the verse implies that, if you are in doubt about the life after death, and the raise of the deads; you can make sure by studying your own creation, or the creation of the nature around you. See that how wonderfully have you been raised up from the dead and lifeless dust, and turned into plant and vegetation, of which the seed or semen has been made. Then how the semen will turn into fertilised ovum, and to a blood-clot, and after that to a lump of flesh; created or uncreated. Then stage by stage it develops to become a foetus and then an infant which is no more than an animal. Then the infant will grow to youth, and age, through which he gains knowledge and wisdom. When developed to a Man, he obtains rational and spiritual knowledge and faculties.

Then the man will have a new kind of creation by losing his physical body and passing through the gate of death.

This shows that any time we died from a stage of life, we were given a newer creation and raised to a higher and more developed stage of life:ِ

*****

I died a mineral and became a plant.

I died a plant and rose an animal.

I died an animal and I was man.

Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?

Yet once more I shall die as man, To soar

With the blessed angels; but even from angelhood

I must pass on. All except God perishes.

When I have sacrificed my angel soul,

I shall become that which no mind ever conceived.

O, Let me not exist! For non-existence proclaims,

      ``To Him we shall return

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE

So, why should you then think that your death will give an end to your existence? Only a learned biologist can understand how wonderfully Man's physical growth from nothing, reaches to a perfect human being; bestowed with knowledge, wisdom, and divine power and spirit.

In the successive stages of Man's physical and spiritual growth, and also that of the animal and plant, in the course of evolution, every now and then we may clearly see the Gracious hand of the All-knowing, All-mighty, and the most Merciful God who creates, cherishes, and sustains every creature.

All these changes, and step by step revolutions and evolutions are evidences that the Creator is able to do whatever He intends.

Then the verses follow another way of reasoning by applying to the life of plants:ِ We see the earth to be barren, dry, and dead. Then it rains down, and the earth moves on, and stirs internally, and begins to put forth grasses, plants, and all sorts of attractive bloom. It produces beautiful flowers of various colours, and delicious fruits, with different tastes and essence of the colourless water and soil.... many things of the same thing!

In the next verses (NO.6ِ7), a general conclusion has been taken; Everything that happens, is based on the truth and reality of God. That God is the absolute truth, and He will of surety bring the deads back to life, and that the resurrection is so very easy to Him, Who has power over everything. He who gives life to the lifeless soil, and develops the lifeless soil and the valueless sperm up to a perfect and precious living thing like man and animal, and He who makes gardens of fruits out of the barren land, is of course able to give us a new creation when we die, or raise up the dead from his grave.

In fact, whatever we see along our stage by stage journey of development and evolution; points out to a reality which exists behind it. The material things might prove to be only shadows, but we should not forget that any shadow is a real reflection from a substance. So the shadow of a tree may become short, long, appear, or disappear; but the tree itself will be stable in its relative time and space.
