Quran,Translation and Commentary in Brief (Vol. 03)
Verses 33-34Verse 35

The argument goes back to monotheism once again; that, how would you compare the Lord God, who is the guardian of all the creatures, standing on watch over every soul and all that it earns, with an inanimate idol which is carved out of a stone!??

It seems as if the verse wants to say:ِ ``God stands overhead watching with full knowledge of what we do, while He keeps an account of our conducts and a record of what we have earned. Then how can we associate any partner with such a sacred and supreme being!?'' The verse then says:ِ ``Just call yoyr false gods by their names, and ou will see that they are nothing but names, and there is not the least of reality behind these names to which you have grasped.

Our Lord God can be attributed with beautiful and qualifying names like; Creator, Sustainer, Cherisher, Merciful, All-knowing, All-mighty and etc., but what of your false gods and idols? To put it in another way; what have your false gods and idols, or other kind of fetishes have done so far or can they do? What sort of a help can they give to their worshippers, in the emergency cases or when misfortune and calamities overtake them?

The verses end in that; the bad consequences of sin which can be seen here in this world, are nothing compared to the torments of the next life.
